Here is the proof from the Colbert Report. Of course Patel himself denies this claim which Colbert sees as further proof of its veracity.

Strange story. kinda surreal. It made me interested in reading Patel's book:

"The Value of Nothing: How to reshape market society and redefine democracy"

Too bad that I'm so stuck with work that I have barely time to read the newspaper. :-(

greetings
According to the Huffington Post summary of the interview:

"Patel spoke with Stephen Colbert last night over the phone about his recent Messiah-hood. He called the whole idea 'entirely bogus,' especially considering his strongly-held belief that we shouldn't rely on religious leaders to make decisions for us, but to think for ourselves. In The Value of Nothing Patel urges people to think about the true costs of the things we purchase, and take concrete steps towards changing the world."

In a roundabout and ironic way Patel is the next Buddha, if we accept that "The Next Buddha will be a Collective." The latter references an article by Michel Bauwens which has the same message as Patel: that the age of individual gurus is over, that we have to think for ourselves as interdependent individuals in democratic collectives and spirituality will manifest in concrete political-economic actions like how we spend our money and how we govern ourselves. All of which will express as a post-capitalistic system.

It is no surprise that I-I, in holding to the conservative, hierarchical, guru and capitalist model, is not on the next evolutionary wave.
Patel also did a review of Avatar on his homepage dated 1/29/10 (scroll down a bit). He provides some interesting back story and some of the fascinating plot lines that didn't make it into the final cut.
Interesting, Edward. The messiah thing is funny -- and probably a mixed blessing for him (embarrassing, but good for exposure) -- but Patel himself seems like an interesting fellow. I'd like to check out his book.
Interesting. But Patel is not the only contestor for the Matreyah title.

In case you didn't see this yet, here is a video by the Raelian UFO Sect which explains why their leader, the charismatic Claude Vorilhon a.k.a. Rael is the next Matreya.

Please note that the word 'Elohim' means 'Those who came from the Sky'. Plural. Collective.

The evidence is building up if you ask me. ^_^
* We must pay the right price for what we consume *. the 200 dollar burger. this is the point I made in are we serious about affecting cultural transformation thread. That a dollar you pay for supermarket/ factory farmed food , the actual cost is probably five dollars. Looks like I underestimated the actuals. Ha ha. Considering the environmental, health care, insurance, inflation and exploitation costs. my intent wasn’t based on any kind of study.
He talks about food sovereignty and how the world bank, WTO and IMF use structural adjustment devices to diminish states. ways companies like Monsanto contaminate and control agriculture and farmers . Vandana Shiva has been doing some excellent work on this for some time . A good perspective on food policies and food crises of the world.
Surprisingly patel seems to be getting some mass media attention which has led some people to become suspicious what his agenda is. Since his work is out of line. you throw in the maitreya thing in the mix, you’ve got enough ambiguity for whatever reasons. He ought to be an important voice for what he has to say.

But yeah, The messiah tag is fun. Grinny. my paranoia quotient is done for the day with Aldous and all the warning :--)

What paths lie ahead for religion and spirituality in the 21st Century? How might the insights of modernity and post-modernity impact and inform humanity's ancient wisdom traditions? How are we to enact, together, new spiritual visions – independently, or within our respective traditions – that can respond adequately to the challenges of our times?

This group is for anyone interested in exploring these questions and tracing out the horizons of an integral post-metaphysical spirituality.
