Participatory Spirituality for the 21st Century
Here's another arrangement I did this weekend: American Night. This is a song by my late friend, Jimmy Thornton, and his band, The Jones.
I get a bit of a Cobain feel off the second track. It seems he was able to cover a large range with his musical ability. Actually, I get a lot of different pieces of familiarity in the second track; I just can't place them all.
I'm surprised how open your taste in music is, Bruce.
I believe this song was recorded originally in the early to mid-eighties, so Jimmy and his group (and later, our group, The Dog Soldiers) were anticipating some of the sounds that soon emerged ... grunge, post-punk, certain alt-rock bands. But I know Jimmy also had influences of various styles, from instrumental fingerpicking guitar to The Clash to stuff like the Allman Bros, Van Morisson, The Replacements, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, jazz, blues, reggae, etc.
This song (or, really, two-songs-in-one: American Night and Bite the Bullet) was part of a rock opera he was writing -- which was both an indictment of empty consumerist American culture but also of himself via his portrayal of the somewhat self-destructive protagonist...
Regarding my own musical inclinations, I guess I do have something of an eclectic taste. I appreciate your taking the time to listen to the stuff I post, Seth!
In American Night I hear a mix of Cobain and early Roy Orbison. I know that latter is not mentioned in his influences but I hear it nonetheless.
