Hi Bruce,
Yes, I enjoyed the book much and found it useful in discussions with a long-time evangelical friend I worked with for ~15 years.
Thanks for posting this. To me, these are the kinds of considerations that may improve the dialog with those in the faith who have grown and can see clearly that faith 'evolves' [although they may not use that word because of unconscious bias].
The phase, "Growing in the faith," may be heard among these folks with an occasional, slight edge of distaste for…

Cheers,
Hi Balder
Yes a classical developmental model strongly correlating to others as you showed it in that diagram.
These stages are helpful for the minister, the therapist, or of any sort of pedagogist using them. They can easily identify the problem and the level of copying strategies the individual is confronting during a life crisis.
In a higher spiritual context, we can recognized for example how the “Nights” of St John of the Cross can fit and be integrated in this model. But at which level do they start?

St John was once a conventional christian and he went later through a metanoia process in his life as a mystic.

Where are we to locate his conception of process leading to “spiritual illumination”? From stage 3 to 4 which?

This transition was already a great achievement at the renaissance in Spain when the majority of people were busy persecuting the remnants of muslims and jews after the final reconquest of the land.
or later?

Confirming the earliest effect of the upcoming probability meme wave “orange” charateristic of the reformation period, it is highly likely to consider that a mystic (representing now a very liitle fraction of the christian world because some advanced elements living the monastic life go through a profound crisis at that time) like St John could describe the transition stage 4 to 5 which is a very difficult step because the crisis of faith is at its apex at that level.

So could we deliberately speculate that St John is at a “middle orange” phase in his faith stage (the differentiation phase within the meme) when the green wave still is four centuries ahead?
