Perhaps someone can help me out by explaining either the appeal or the contribution of Stuart Davis to the integral community.

I guess I'm curious, but not curious to actually check him out myself. I've never been attracted to click on the Stuart Davis links that come regularly from Integral Life. I have a slow internet connection, so I have to be really committed to watch a video (streaming doesn't work well, and I basically have to commit to a long download).

I don't have an informed judgement, but he comes across to me as a caricature of the stereotypical "outrageous" rock-n-roll personality or shock jock. It seems to not be about the music, but about the personality, and entertainment that appeals to base instincts and faux hipness.

So what's up with this? I'm guessing there's some kind of "integral" message buried in here somewhere? Is he considered the "late night" Jeff Salzman? And where does "God" come in to all of this?

By Lawson Fletcher

Abstract

Amongst the ways in which it maps out the geographical imagination of place, music plays a unique role in the formation and reformation of spatial memories, connecting to and reviving alternative times and places latent within a particular environment. Post-rock epitomises this: understood as a kind of negative space, the genre acts as an elegy for and symbolic reconstruction of the spatial erasures of late capitalism. After outlining how post-rock’s accommodation of urban atmosphere into its sonic textures enables an ‘auditory drift’ that orients listeners to the city’s fragments, the article’s first case study considers how formative Canadian post-rock acts develop this concrete practice into the musical staging of urban ruin. Turning to Sigur Rós, the article challenges the assumption that this Icelandic quartet’s music simply evokes the untouched natural beauty of their homeland, through a critical reading of the 2007 tour documentary Heima. A closer reading of the band’s audiovisual practice reveals a counter-geography of Iceland, in which the country’s decaying industrial past is excavated and its more recent ecological failures are accounted for. As with post-rock more generally, this proposes a more complex relationship between music, place and memory than that offered by notions of reflection and nostalgia, which instead emerges as a melancholic mourning for spatial pasts.

Onto-ethologies: The Animal Environments of Uexkull, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Deleuze, Brett Buchanan

Neither Sun Nor Death, Peter Sloterdijk (This one just arrived in the mail yesterday and I've only just started it... I was interested to see Wilber and Krishnamurti both mentioned in the index).

The Art of Philosophy, Peter Sloterdijk

The Prince of Networks, Graham Harman

The Coming Interspiritual Age, Dr. Kurt Johnson

In Streams of Wisdom, Dustin DiPerna

And a new one I'll be getting soon (by recommendation):

Interestingly, I read a sci-fi book back in the early 80s, based on the speculation that dolphins communicate with each other by sonically replicating and linguistically ordering the sound-pictures of objects generated by their sonar. It looks like that may actually be the case.

One quote from the article:

As a result of Reid’s bio-cymatic imaging technique Kassewitz, in collaboration with research intern Christopher Brown, of the University of Central Florida, is beginning to develop a new model of dolphin language that they are calling Sono-Pictorial Exo-holographic Language, (SPEL). Kassewitz explained,

The ‘exo-holographic’ part of the acronym derives from the fact that the dolphin pictorial language is actually propagated all around the dolphin whenever one or more dolphins in the pod send or receive sono-pictures. John Stuart Reid has found that any small part of the dolphin’s reflected echolocation beam contains all the data needed to recreate the image cymatically in the laboratory or, he postulates, in the dolphin’s brain. Our new model of dolphin language is one in which dolphins can not only send and receive pictures of objects around them but can create entirely new sono-pictures simply by imagining what they want to communicate. It is perhaps challenging for us as humans to step outside our symbolic thought processes to truly appreciate the dolphin’s world in which, we believe, pictorial rather than symbolic thoughts are king. Our personal biases, beliefs, ideologies, and memories penetrate and encompass all of our communication, including our description and understanding of something devoid of symbols, such as SPEL. Dolphins appear to have leap-frogged human symbolic language and instead have evolved a form of communication outside the human evolutionary path. In a sense we now have a ‘Rosetta Stone’ that will allow us to tap into their world in a way we could not have even conceived just a year ago. The old adage, ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’ suddenly takes on a whole new meaning.
